ABOUT THE PRIZE
The Institute of International Education (IIE) awards the Victor J. Goldberg IIE Prize for Peace in the Middle East annually to recognize outstanding work being conducted jointly by two individuals, one Arab and one Israeli, working together to advance the cause of peace in the Middle East. The two individuals whose work is judged to be most successful in bringing people together and breaking down the barriers of hatred toward "the other" share a $10,000 prize. The winners are selected by a prestigious international selection committee.
The Prize goes to two individuals. Either or both may be part of an organization, but the two individuals need to have taken an initiative with each other that either caused those organizations to be formed, or significantly moved those organizations in a new direction or to a new level of achievement.
As the award is a Prize for the individuals, not a Grant to support the organization or project, the money may be used by the winners in any way they choose.
The project being recognized must be an ongoing activity that is currently underway; it cannot be a proposal for a project to be done in the future.
Nominations may be submitted by the individuals themselves or by a third party.
According to Mr. Goldberg, "The intent of this award is to recognize innovation and reward those who are courageous and committed enough to work together to overcome the religious, cultural, ethnic, and political issues which divide the Middle East. We hope not only to recognize significant work being conducted today, but also to inspire others to join together across these divides to advance the cause of peace in the coming years."
Allan E. Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, says, "The Goldberg IIE Prize will encourage some of the best and the brightest young professionals to contribute their valuable knowledge and experience to the cause of peace in the Middle East, and will reward them for their courage and conviction in doing so. We believe this is the first Prize designed specifically to reward Arab-Israeli cooperation in this area. It is a wonderful embodiment of Vic Goldberg's long-time commitment to bettering the world through international cooperation."
GOALS
- To advance the cause of peace in the Middle East
- To bring people together across religious, cultural, ethnic, and political divides
- To break down barriers of hate towards "the other"
- To recognize innovation and reward those who are courageous and committed enough to work to overcome the religious, cultural, ethnic and political issues which divide the region
- To inspire others in the U.S. and the Middle East
- To motivate current and future IIE grantees to work toward peace in the Middle East
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the Prize, at least one of the nominated individuals must have visited the United States as an alumna/us of any program administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), or any exchange program funded by any of IIE's sponsors and administered by another organization. Alumni of the following IIE-administered programs, among others, are encouraged to apply: Fulbright Programs, Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships, International Visitor Leadership Program (formerly International Visitor Program, or IVP), State Department Middle East Partnership Initiative, Ford Foundation International Fellowship Program, Ford Foundation Global Travel and Learning Fund, and training programs funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Fulbright alumni and alumni of the Israel Arab Scholarship Program whose grants were administered by AMIDEAST are also eligible. Similarly, individuals who came to the United States under funding from the Ford Foundation or as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program are eligible even if they were participating in a program coordinated by another organization.

ENDOWMENT
The Prize has been endowed through a contribution from IIE's Executive Committee member and former vice chairman, Victor J. Goldberg, to recognize and advance the work of the Institute.
In his gift letter Mr. Goldberg stated, "Political leaders and governments have so far been unable to bring lasting peace to this troubled area. Hatred and fear of 'the other' abound. While there is no magic solution, one positive force may be to encourage people to live and work together at the grass roots, learning to trust and depend on one another for their common good."
