IIE Capabilities
IIE Divisions and Worldwide Staff
IIE’s programs are managed by professional staff with expertise in such diverse fields as energy and environment, democracy and governance, agriculture and forestry, rule of law, business and public administration, human rights, engineering, economic development, and the arts. IIE’s program staff is organized into four departments:
- Exchange Programs and Regional Services: This department manages the U.S. and Foreign Fulbright Student Programs and the International Visitor Program, both funded by the U.S. Department of State, as well as other privately funded academic and professional exchange programs. With 130 staff in New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Denver, Houston, and San Francisco, this department conducts extensive outreach to local communities throughout the U.S.
- Center for Global Development (CGD): Since 1981, IIE's Center for Global Development (CGD) has administered professional capacity-building programs serving participants from developing countries. Programs range from one-week professional/technical exchanges to multi-year advanced degree programs. CGD’s professional training and exchange services have allowed participants to gain both industry and public agency based expertise, and acquire leadership, management and technical skills in such fields as, Energy and Environmental Management, Reproductive Health, Leadership Development and Civil Society, Rule of Law and Municipal Services. With a staff of 138 people in 13 countries, the CGD is IIE’s primary mechanism for initiating multi-sector development assistance contracts worldwide.
- Education and Corporate Services: This department administers leadership development and skills training programs for mid-career professionals. A particular focus in leadership development is in women's leadership. Educational Services staff also conducts policy and statistical research on international academic mobility, and provides educational advising and testing services in our overseas offices. Moreover, the department of 75 staff members in nine offices around the world holds responsibility for a variety of scholarship programs that serve clients including multilateral financial institutions, major foundations, and multinational corporations.
- Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES): CIES was founded in 1947 to administer the Fulbright Scholar Program and has grown to house other international exchange initiatives. In 1997, CIES affiliated with and became a department of IIE. Based in Washington DC, CIES sends some 800 U.S. academics and professionals abroad each year and brings approximately 800 foreign faculty and professionals to the U.S. The day-to-day work of CIES is carried out by 40 program officers and staff organized by world region.
