IIE Capabilities
Select Academic and Professional Exchange Programs
Academic and professional exchange programs have been at the heart of IIE’s work for over 80 years. In partnership with USAID, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), U.S. Embassies, and Fulbright Commissions, IIE supports the worldwide administration of hundreds of exchange programs. For these programs, IIE’s responsibilities include administering the application process, awarding grants, arranging university placement, negotiating cost sharing, monitoring grantees’ progress, and maintaining relationships with participants after completion of their program. Some of IIE’s current academic and professional exchange programs are listed below:
- Fulbright Program: IIE has administered the Fulbright Program - the U.S. Government’s premier public policy diplomacy initiative - since its establishment at the end of World War II to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and other countries. While its primary source of funding is the U.S. Department of State, participating governments and host institutions also contribute financial support. IIE administers Fulbright grants for university teaching, advanced research, and graduate study.
- International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP): IIE designs and implements short-term programs for leaders and specialists in numerous professions, matching the vast resources of the U.S. with the specific needs of participants from around the world. IIE offers expertise in planning and managing programs in fields such as trade, economic development, management, marketing, economic policy, politics, pluralism, the U.S. political process, education and university administration, journalism, resource management, environmental protection, substance abuse and drug trafficking control.
- National Security Education Program (NSEP): NSEP was established by the National Security Education Act of 1991 to provide resources for scholarships, fellowships and grants. It seeks to help U.S. citizens understand foreign cultures, to strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness, and to enhance international cooperation and security. IIE administers the grant competition for undergraduate students.
- Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program: Initiated in 1978 by the U.S. Government and administered by IIE since its inception, the Humphrey Program brings accomplished professionals from selected developing countries to the U.S. for a year of study and related professional experiences. The program provides a basis for establishing lasting ties between citizens of the United States and their professional counterparts, and fosters an exchange of knowledge and mutual understanding.
- Toyota International Teacher Program: IIE administers a two-week cultural and educational program in Japan for 50 U.S. high school teachers for Toyota Motor Sales, Inc. This professional development opportunity enables secondary school teachers from six states where Toyota has manufacturing plants to travel to Japan to learn about its culture, values and education system, as well as its approach to issues such as technology and the environment.
- Global Engineering Education Exchange (Global E³): Recognizing a growing demand for more well-rounded, global-minded engineering graduates, a consortium of leading universities around the world has joined IIE in establishing Global E³. This program provides students at member institutions with opportunities for practical training in a foreign setting, for which they receive academic credit at their home institution, whether the course takes place during a summer, semester, or academic year.
- Fulbright Indo-American Environmental Leadership Program FIAELP: Working with the U.S. Education Foundation in India, IIE is arranging short-term professional sojourns in the United states for a select group on Indian mid-level professionals from public agencies, private companies and NGO's. Similar attachments are to Indian institutions will be arranged for a series of U.S. participants selected by IIE. The program will focus on subject in the areas of environmental education, environmental sciences and technology, public advocacy for the envirnment and environmental information systems.
