Award-winning author, photojournalist, and humanitarian, Dr. Ruth Gruber, far right, receives IIE's First Annual Fritz Redlich Alumni Award from IIE Trustees Henry Jarecki and Henry Kaufman, as actress Natasha Richardson looks on. Apart from Ruth's many publications and photos from around the world, she is well known for having escorted 1,000 World War II refugees to America as part of a secret U.S. goverment mission during World War II. Among those Ruth rescued were Dr. Alex Margulies, who helped develop the CAT-scan and the MRI, and Karl and Rech Kaufman, the uncle and aunt of renowned economist and IIE's chairman of the Board, Henry Kaufman. In 2001, this story from Ruth Gruber's life was made into a CBS miniseries called "Haven," starring Tony-winning actress Natasha Richardson as Ruth. IIE was honored to have Natasha Richardson introduce Ruth at this year's Awards Dinner.
* Ruth Gruber received her Ph.D. at age 20 while studying in Germany on an IIE grant in 1932.
