OVERVIEW OF THE FULBRIGHT PROGRAM
2005 Fulbright Enrichment Seminars and School Visits
Fulbright Enrichment Seminars: Fulbright fellows from nearly 150 countries are joining together in a series of seven seminars across the United States to discuss important world issues and trends. These seminars, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State and run by the Institute of International Education, are an integral part of the overall Fulbright experience. They are designed to support the Fulbright Program objective of promoting mutual understanding between people of the United States and the people of Fulbright partner countries. In this critical time in our history, mutual respect and understanding are vitally important as we all work to reach peaceful solutions to conflict. School Visits: In each city, the seminar will include visits by foreign Fulbright Students to local classrooms, where Fulbrighters will gain insight into U.S. student life and share diverse facets of their own countries and cultures with the young American students they meet.

On October 15, Secretary of State Colin Powell released the official list of US student Fulbright grantees for the 2004-2005 academic year, a total of 1,099 grants. With more than 100,000 U.S. alumni of this program, and with this new group of more than 1000 grantees from all across the United States joining their ranks, the Fulbright Program has a growing network of individuals who are doing their part to increase mutual understanding between people of the United States and people of other nations.
In his Statement, Secretary of State Colin Powell said, “As Fulbrighters, these Americans have important responsibilities. First and foremost, they engage in serious academic study or research abroad. In addition, they will immerse themselves in learning about their new host country and will have opportunities to share their perspectives on the United States with their hosts." And this week, in a front-page headline, The Chronicle of Higher Education announced “The Fulbright Branches Out.” This feature, timed to coincide with the announcement of the 1,100 new U.S. Student Fulbright Awards for 2004-05, highlighted new Fulbright U.S. Student Program initiatives such as the Islamic Civilization Initiative and expanded Fulbright Teaching Assistantship opportunities. It was accompanied by profiles of five different U.S. students, which make lively reading and portray the face of the Fulbright program in a way that goes far beyond the statistics.
