Government Agencies

Government Partners

US and foreign government sponsors are key partners with the Institute of International Education in the implementation of its international education exchange and global development programs. Foremost among them are two U.S. Government agencies, the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

U.S. Department of State

For over 55 years, IIE has collaborated with the U.S. Department of State in the administration of the J. William Fulbright U.S. and Foreign Student and Scholars programs. IIE currently administers over forty other programs sponsored by the State Department through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, including the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship program, International Visitors program, the Gilman Scholarship Program, and the Open Doors survey.

U.S. Agency for International Development

IIE has also been a strong global development partner with the U.S. Agency for International Development. With USAID funding and support, IIE has implemented key training and technical assistance programs in the economic growth, energy, environment, women in development, democracy and governance, and global training sectors. IIE is currently managing over 40 separate programs for USAID, including Development Training II in Egypt, the Exchange Program for Sustainable Growth in Asia, EcoLinks in Central and Eastern Europe and Russia and the NIS and the globally-based Energy and Environment Training Project and Emerging Markets Development Advisors Program.

IIE also partners with other U.S. Government agencies, including:

  • US Department of Defense
  • US Department of Education
  • US Department of Energy
  • National Institute on Drug Abuse

Equally important to IIE's global education and development programs has been the key support of Foreign Government partners in the development and implementation of programs with direct impact on the citizens of their respective countries. The Institute is proud of its ongoing strong partnerships particularly with the Governments of Brazil, Italy, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand through the following ministries and agencies:
