Peace and prosperity around the world depend on increasing the capacity of people to think and work on a global and intercultural basis. As technology opens borders, educational and professional exchange opens minds.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is a world leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. Founded in 1919, IIE is one of the world's largest and most experienced nonprofit international exchange organizations. IIE designs and implements fellowship, training, and technical assistance programs for sponsors that include government agencies, corporations, foundations, universities, and international organizations. IIE also provides educational and information services to the public and academic community, and convenes educators, policy makers, and philanthropy executives to discuss strategies for fostering international cooperation through international exchange.

Mission
IIE's mission is to develop global leaders, promote mutual understanding, and promote academic freedom around the world. In partnership with forward-looking governments, educational institutions, corporations, and foundations, the Institute's world-wide staff and programs enable emerging leaders to think globally as they work to improve the societies in which they live.

Programs
IIE currently administers over 200 programs benefiting nearly 20,000 men and women from 175 nations. IIE forges partnerships between the public and private sectors to design and implement international programs with special emphasis on:

  • Promoting a global perspective in U.S. higher education
  • Preparing business and management for strategic thinking about the global economy
  • Promoting effective environmental and energy management strategies
  • Strengthening civil society, democracy, human rights, and academic freedom

Services
In addition, IIE conducts research and provides information on international study to students, prospective students, educators, government officials, and business leaders worldwide through publications, conferences, seminars, advising, and web-based services. These include IIE's website, IIE's on-line database of study abroad opportunities, and IIE's membership network for international education professionals.

Resources
In addition to funding provided by public and private-sector sponsors, IIE seeks support from corporations, foundations and individuals who share its vision.

Organization
With headquarters in New York City, IIE has 18 offices around the world, including U.S. representative offices in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, Houston, and San Francisco. Offices abroad are in China, Egypt, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines, Russia, Thailand, Ukraine, and Vietnam. IIE employs a staff of 450 worldwide, and is governed by a 40-member Board of Trustees chaired by Thomas S. Johnson. Dr. Allan E. Goodman is President and CEO of the Institute.
