Remarks at Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Lunch
UN Delegates Dining Room, 12 July 2006

I was glad you liked the show.  But I remain deeply disappointed through the years at how nobody really creative has expressed concerned about the Wizard of Oz.  His fate in “Wicked” is no better, I learned, than in the movie.

Running a non-profit organization these days is a bit like what the Wizard was doing behind the curtain.  And like the scarecrow, tin man, and lion, we are all hoping that someone will give us the right gift.

Thankfully there are foundations like the ones John Whitehead has been associated with that do just that.  He is an exemplar of a commitment to service in the public and private sectors – and of the importance of philanthropy to making society work and the world a less dangerous place.

It is a privilege to ask him to speak.
