What is Global E3?

The Global Engineering Education Exchange Program.

Recognizing a growing demand for internationally-experienced engineering graduates, a group of leading universities around the world established the Global E3 in 1995. Global E3 allows engineering students at member universities to enjoy a fulfilling study abroad experience.

  • Tuition Swap: Global E3 students pay tuition at their home institution, and enjoy the benefits of attending an overseas one!
  • Flexible Timing: Students can study abroad for the fall semester, spring semester, or the entire school year.
  • Overseas Internships: Global E3 students are able to take on a supplemental internships after their study abroad experience. Not all member universities offer this option, but those that do help provide students with industrial placements near the university, co-op internships within the university, and more.

Through participation in the program, Global E3 graduates gain the necessary foreign language ability, cross-cultural skills, and professional experience to excel in the multinational/multicultural business environment of the 21st century. The importance of this unique program has been recognized by the National Science Foundation, AT&T Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education, all of which provided the start-up funds for the program. The program is sustained with membership fees from participating universities and from corporations.

University Members of Global E3 Program

The Global E3 Program consists of two consortia of universities working together to provide an excellent study abroad experience to engineering students.

  • IIE / Global E3 Consortium: About 45 universities worldwide - about 35 in the United States, and 10 in the United Kingdom, Central & Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East - comprise the Global E3 consortium. This consortium is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York. Students from members of this consortium may apply to go to any participating university outside their own country.
  • GE4 Consortium: About 35 continental western European universities comprise the GE4 consortium, administered by Global Education for European Engineers and Entrepreneurs (GE4) in Paris. Students from these universities can apply to study at any one of the U.S. Global E3 member universities.

Additional members are consistently being added on a gradual basis to widen the diversity of the participating student pool.

Program Structure

  1. Students are nominated by their home institution and receive credit at home for academic work completed abroad.
  2. They study overseas in a member institution for one or two semesters, typically in their junior year.
  3. Integral to the program is intensive language instruction and the opportunity for students to undertake a practical, paid internship in an industrial setting or laboratory in the host country. The internship component is an especially valuable element in strengthening the international and professional competency of the students, as well as a unique opportunity for host companies to become acquainted with these talented young people at an early stage in their careers.

The program is competitive, selecting only the most promising students with sufficient language ability to successfully complete coursework overseas and engage in a meaningful work experience in industry. In order to expand the opportunities for outstanding students with minimal foreign language ability, some members outside the United States provide instruction in English as well as the home country language.
