THE RUTH GRUBER CHAIR OF THE SCHOLAR RESCUE FUND

To honor a renowned IIE alumna who has dedicated her life to rescue, IIE is seeking to raise an endowment for the Ruth Gruber Chair. This will enable the Institute to rescue two scholars each year in Dr. Gruber’s name in perpetuity.

The Chair is part of IIE’s plan to raise an endowment for the Scholar Rescue Fund in order to ensure that there will always be a place where persecuted academics can find safe haven.

RUTH GRUBER

Ruth GruberRuth Gruber’s brilliant career was launched by an IIE scholarship in 1931, enabling her to earn a doctorate at the age of 20, making her the youngest person at the time to achieve that degree.

A renowned author, photo-journalist and humanitarian, Dr. Gruber is well known for her work in 1944 helping rescue 1,000 World War II refugees and winning their right to stay in America. That story was told in her book, Haven, which was recently made into a CBS mini-series starring Natasha Richardson as Ruth. In October 2002, the Institute presented Dr. Gruber with its inaugural Fritz Redlich Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement.
