IIE has worked to develop the leadership abilities of talented individuals around the world since 1919. It fosters mutual understanding, builds global problem-solving capabilities, and develops institutional capacity. Headquartered in New York City, IIE is the most experienced non-profit educational and cultural exchange, training, and technical assistance organization in the United States.

IIE's European office was established in Budapest, Hungary in 1990. The office manages a variety of projects, including educational and cultural exchanges, training and internship programs, workshops and seminars, as well as study tours and site visits. IIE cooperates with universities, advising centers, foundations, corporations, government agencies, and NGOs.
