Student Services
IIE will organize a three-week educational seminar in Budapest in May-June 2002 as a part of the Flinn Scholars Program. The Flinn Foundation awards four-year comprehensive scholarships to top students from Arizona to encourage them to complete their university studies in the state. Flinn and IIE are working together to organize a program in Budapest for the scholars designed to encourage them to become global citizens. The program will address the historic, economic, political, and cultural forces that have been shaping post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe.
IIE administered a Parliamentary Internship Program in Hungary in 1998–1999. This program enabled students to participate in political culture and provided valuable assistance to the Parliament. Interns were placed with parliamentary committees to conduct research, provide background information on bills, and facilitate the Parliament's work. Students gained international experience and learned about other political systems through study trips to foreign legislatures. In addition, specialized seminars for MPs, parliamentary staff and interns were organized. IIE is seeking funding to continue this program in Hungary and is working with regional organizations to develop similar programs in other countries in the region, including Slovakia and Romania.
IIE has published two editions of Returning to Central Europe. This guide equips university graduates for the job search by giving practical advice on career hunting and profiles of organizations in the region that seek to hire Central Europeans. The book is distributed free of charge to Czech, Hungarian, Polish and Slovak students and educational advising centers in the U.S. and Central Europe. A full text version of Returning to Central Europe is available online. Editions for Central Europe and Southeastern Europe are scheduled for publication in 2000.
Professional Training Programs
IIE is working with Lucent Technologies to create the Lucent Science Teacher Development Program, a professional training program designed to increase the capacities of European secondary school science and math teachers. This year-long program will provide professional development opportunities for teachers through seminars, site visits, and information exchange. Participating teachers will work on collaborative projects and involve students by bringing new internet learning techniques into their classrooms.
IIE administers the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program worldwide on behalf of the United States Department of State. This program brings mid-career professionals from a number of Central and Eastern European countries to the U.S. for a year of intensive study and professional development.
IIE's Professional Exchange Programs division organizes educational and professional stays in the U.S. for short-term visitors from numerous fields. This program gives them exposure to the most recent developments in their areas of expertise and allows them to meet with U.S. colleagues to foster future cooperation. Two recent European groups included Czech university international office staff and Slovene telecommunications managers.
Corporate Services
IIE has recently inaugurated an annual worldwide scholarship program for Lucent Technologies. The Lucent Global Science Scholars Program was established to encourage the world's youth to pursue careers in communications technology. This program reflects IIE's commitment to bring together two of its important constituencies, business and universities. The program recognizes and rewards students who have made significant achievements in math and science by awarding them scholarships and internships at Lucent facilities. During the 2000–2001 academic year, scholarships are available for students in engineering fields at selected universities in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
IIE cooperates closely with Central European branches of the American Chamber of Commerce on a number of activities. AmCham has been IIE's partner on Returning to Central Europe both years of its publication. IIE's deputy director is chairperson of the Education Committee of Hungary's AmCham, an active member of the Human Resources Forum, and has been the key organizer of the AmCham Internship Fairs in 1998, 1999, and 2000.
