EducationUSA Advising Center
The EducationUSA Advising Center at the Institute of International Education (IIE) is proud to be a leader in fostering educational ties between the United States and Mexico. Since 1974, IIE Mexico has provided information related to all levels and types of education in the United States. Most of the resources are designed for students inquiring about undergraduate, graduate, technical, vocational, and English as a second language programs. The Center also has some information on short-term courses, summer camps, and primary and secondary schools.
IIE provides information on all aspects of education in the United States including programs of study, scholarship opportunities, and university application procedures. Our staff is available to give explanations regarding the information requested; however, the actual research must be done by the solicitant. Once you have obtained the necessary information (i.e. addresses, telephone and fax numbers, application procedures, etc.), it is your responsibility to contact the institutions directly.
Technology Center: CD ROM Programs and Software for Test Preparation
By means of the technology center at IIE, you have the capability to search university catalogs for specific college descriptions, participate in a computer interview which gauges a list of undergraduate institutions most suited to your needs and personal taste, and prepare for a variety of computer-based tests such as TOEFL, GMAT, GRE, SAT and USMLE. For further information on these services, please visit or call the IIE reference desk.
Admission Exams
IIE was the first center to offer computerized U.S. admission testing in Latin America. Currently, IIE administers TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, USMLE, and GED. Please consult the testing section for further details.
Financial Aid
Those interested in applying to an undergraduate program should inquire about financial aid opportunities when writing to the university of their choice. Financial aid at this level of study is extremely limited for international students. Those interested in applying to a graduate program should request financial aid information directly from the graduate department. There are a limited number of assistantships (teaching and research) available, however, they are very competitive. There is no financial aid available to study English as a second language in the United States.
IIE administers a scholarship program for students at the graduate level, the Regional Program for Graduate Fellowships in the Social Sciences, which is sponsored by the Ford, MacArthur and Hewlett Foundations. Please consult the section on scholarships for further information on this program.
Additional information on financial is available in the section on publications section for further details.
Please keep in mind that the majority of U.S. citizens or person who have residency can apply for financial aid (mainly loans) offered by federally subsidized universities. However, international students do not qualify for federal funding.
Public Orientations
General orientations on opportunities in U.S. higher education are held on a regular basis in the EducationUSA Advising Center. The orientations last approximately one hour and are designed to instruct students on how to use reference materials, to explain application procedures, and to provide information on admission exams and scholarships. Specialized workshops, such as ”Writing a Personal Statement for Graduate School" and Pre-Departure preparation are also offered throughout the year. Pre-registration is required for the orientations and the workshops. Please call or email the EducationUSA Advising Center to confirm the dates of the presentations that interest you. Attendance at an orientation is invaluable for a successful university search.
