Regional Program for Graduate Fellowships in the Social Sciences
The Institute of International Education announces the new fellowship promotion for the Regional Program for Graduate Fellowships in the Social Sciences, funded by the Ford Foundation.
The program offers complementary scholarships to Mexican citizens from the following states: Campeche, Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatan and Central American citizens from: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua to pursue master's or doctoral degrees in the social sciences, outside their country of origin. In general terms, these scholarships cover maintenance and medical insurance for the participant and three dependents for a maximum of twenty months.
Students should not apply if they have already started their program of study.
The fields of study include: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science and Sociology. Among these fields, the priority areas are: Human Rights and Judicial Reform, Social, Economic and Community Development, Environment and Sustainable Development, Education and Development, Gender Studies, Government and Democracy, Reproductive and Sexual Health.
Requirements
- Be a citizen of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua or a citizen of the following Mexican states: Chiapas, Campeche, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatan.
- Demonstrate that your activities and analytical work will entail the promotion of social justice and the development of your country or region.
- Present a statement of purpose for your academic project and incorporate how your past experience and future plans are relevant.
- Possess outstanding academic qualifications (a minimum of 8.5 or its equivalent)
- Have plans to study in a graduate or post graduate program of higher learning that will enhance your academic and professional objectives.
- Demonstrate official admission to this graduate or postgraduate program before receiving the scholarship.
- Begin studies in the fall of 2004.
- Present titles obtained.
- Score a minimum of 213 on the computerized TOEFL exam and 550 on each section of the GRE. These exams are necessary if the postgraduate work will take place in the United States or if the Institution or University requires these exams. If you would like to study in a language other than English you need to take the relevant exam and receive a score equivalent to the one mentioned above.

The deadline for applications is February 27, 2004 to start studies in August or September 2004.
Dialogo: The information bulletin for grantees
"Dialogo" is a bulletin for grantees from the Regional Program for Graduate Fellowships in the Social Science. It is distributed amongst the grantees of the program, the Ford Foundation, scholars, and others interested in receiving this publication.
