Developing Human Resources
IIE/Southeast Asia is a branch of the Institute of International Education (IIE), a private, non-profit educational organization headquartered in New York. Founded in 1919, IIE is the oldest and largest educational exchange agency in the United States. It is best known for administering the Fulbright and Humphrey Fellowship Programs on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. It also manages major training programs for the U.S. Agency for International Development as well as private scholarship programs for corporation and foundations.
IIE maintains six offices in the United States as well as overseas offices and affiliates in Almaty, Bangkok, Beijing, Brasilia, Budapest, Cairo, Dhaka, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Khabarovsk, Kiev, Manila, Mexico, City, Moscow, New Delhi, and Pretoria. IIE/Southeast Asia, based in Bangkok, Thailand, was opened in 1962 as IIE’s first office in Asia. Its activities include:
Advising Students about Educational Opportunities
IIE/Southeast Asia provides free advisory services on educational opportunities in the United States to thousands of Thai students, parents and sponsors. IIE/Southeast Asia also assists hundreds of U.S. university representatives who visit Thailand each year, providing information to them about how to link with Thai universities and recruit talented Thai students to their campuses.
IIE/Southeast Asia is an active member of the Thailand Coalition of Non-Profit Educational Advisory Services, which jointly organizes educational information programs including a General Orientation program on U.S. Higher Education, pre-departure orientations, and outreach programs in many parts of Thailand.
Representing Educational Testing Service (ETS)and Prometric
IIE/Southeast Asia represents the Educational Testing Service (ETS) of Princeton, New Jersey, and Prometric of Baltimore, Maryland in administering the TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, GED, USMLE, PMI and PRMIA in Thailand, and the Institutional Testing Program (ITP) in Thailand, Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
Bringing Together Students and Universities/Colleges
IIE/Southeast Asia organizes the annual U.S. Higher Education Fair, which is held each October. The Fair attracts representatives from over 80 U.S. institutions as well as more than 4,000 parents and students. It provides Thai students with opportunities to learn more about higher education in the United States as well as meet representatives from a broad range of U.S. colleges and universities. The Fair is open free to the public.
To promote educational collaboration among universities, colleges and academics in the United States and Thailand, IIE/Southeast Asia has developed a Higher Education Exchange Thailand-USA website (www.jononet.org). This is an Internet accessible database which includes information about universities and colleges in the United States and Thailand that aim to develop collaboration. The service is FREE. Managing Scholarship and Training Programs
IIE/Southeast Asia administers scholarship and training programs for various sponsoring agencies: East-West Center (EWC) Scholarship and the Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) Fellowship, Asian Development Bank (ADB) Scholarship at EWC/University of Hawaii, Japan-International Monetary Fund (IMF) Scholarship Programs, for interested individuals to further their graduate studies in the United States, the General Electric (GE) Foundation and GE Commercial Finance scholarship, and Verizon/Bell Atlantic scholarship programs for undergraduate students studying at local universities.
Developing Regional Human Resources
IIE/Southeast Asia has been collaborating with various organizations in the development of human resources in the region. IIE/Southeast Asia provides support to the Leadership Development Mechanism (LDM) project in Myanmar, funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The project aims to strengthen the population/reproductive health knowledge and skills of emerging and established leaders who have demonstrated vision, commitment, and leadership in the expansion of the reproductive health choices and services in Myanmar.
For the World Wildlife Fund, IIE/Southeast Asia conducts a competition for environmental conservation professionals in Lao PRD and Cambodia, to support their graduate study and short-term training.
IIE/Southeast Asia also assists in implementing several USAID-funded training programs.
Other Educational Services
IIE/Southeast Asia plans and administers short-term training programs and other educational activities when requested by corporations, foundations, government agencies, and other potential sponsors.
