The U.S. Embassy in Delhi has partnered with IIE/South Asia to foster U.S.-India dialogue on potential benefits and challenges associated with implementing the U.S. community college model in India. IIE/South Asia will draw upon its expertise and extensive network to promote dialogue and to support activities such as delegation visits to facilitate academic partnerships between institutions in the two countries.
In June 2013, IIE India office hosted representatives from U.S community colleges on behalf of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). The delegation met with government officials, education administrators, and private sector representatives across the country to develop better understanding of the Indian higher education sector, the potential for expanding the community college model in India, and to explore possibilities for potential partnerships.
During the U.S. India Higher Education Dialogue organized by Ministry of Human Resource Development at New Delhi on 25 June 2013, a new IIE White Paper sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in India was released. "The U.S. Community College Model: Potential for Applications" (1 MB, PDF) in India reflected a focus on education to equip young people with the skills they need to compete globally and in new fields. As a part of future endeavours with regards to community college support, IIE India is organizing a study visit to select U.S. community colleges involving capacity building and site visit for Indian educators and administrators of community colleges in India. Over the course of this program, Indian educators and administrators selected from the open application and competition process will participate in a number of training activities focused on implementing and sustaining partnerships with community colleges in the US.
