An Improved Environmental Footprint Methodology for Life Cycle Assessment

The new Life Cycle Impact Assessment methodology developed by this project will allow for better decision-making and increase the discrimination power of Life Cycle Assessment. It will lead to more precise and environmentally relevant results by applying more scientifically reliable models. The project will seek to implement the most up-to-date scientific knowledge of characterization models in an operational tool.

Some of the main expected improvements from the École Polytechnique de Montréal's contribution to the project include:

  • Integration of uncertainty related to characterization factors and/or impact categories
  • State-of-the-art characterization modeling, particularly in impact categories such as (eco)toxicity, acidification, water use and land use
  • Creation of the first globally regionalized method to assess and discriminate emissions occurring in different geographical locations across the globe
