Intensive English Program

IIE congratulates each grantee on his/her selection as a Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) scholarship recipient.

Since the ability to speak, read, write, and understand English is integral to all grantees' academic success, program sponsors will approve eligible students to participate in a pre-academic Intensive English Program (IEP).

A wide range of partner institutions offer IEPs in two different sessions, Short-Term and Long-Term. The available courses offer targeted language instruction at various levels, as well as cultural and social activities. They also provide a valuable opportunity for grantees to acclimate to the U.S. before the academic year begins.

Please find more information about the different sessions on the next tab.

Short-Term Intensive English Program

For grantees whose TOEFL score falls in the 61-78 iBT (500-550 pBT) range, a 6- to 8-week period of intensive English study is approved for the summer prior to the start of the academic semester.

Long-Term Intensive English Program

For grantees whose TOEFL score falls in the 40-61 iBT (437-497 pBT) range, a 6-month period of intensive English study is approved. These students may begin in the fall, with a January (spring) academic semester start.

All grantees in the J-1 Exchange Visitor non-degree student category are required to be enrolled as full-time students at all times. For the Intensive English Program (IEP), full-time status generally ranges between 4 to 6 classes, 12 to 15 credits, or 18 to 22 contact hours.

In addition, attendance is very important during the IEP and it is expected that grantees meet the attendance requirement of their respective host institution. If a grantee fails to maintain full-time status and full attendance, or is dismissed from the IEP for any reason, he/she is effectively ending the BSMP scholarship and will be required to return to Brazil immediately.

While in the IEP, grantees will be asked to submit a number of reports documenting course enrollment and demonstrating progress. All forms need to be printed, signed, scanned, and uploaded through the BSMP Student Service Portal. Email/newsletter reminders are distributed when it is time for grantees to submit a report.

Intensive English Mid-Program Report

Long Term Intensive English students who began their program in March 2014 are required to submit the Intensive English Mid-program Report. The report is completed by the IEP advisor and signed and dated by both the grantee and the advisor. The form must be submitted through the BSMP Student Service Portal by June 16th, 2014.

Please download the form on the"Materials" page.
