Grant Period: May 2014 – April 2015
PIs: Philip Roessler, Government, College of William and Mary
Robert Blair, Political Science, Yale University

The College of William and Mary will use opinion surveys, experimental games, and focus groups to study whether and how Chinese development assistance, focused on infrastructure, influences local governance in Africa. With the DFG grant, the PI team will conduct an initial pilot study of its hypotheses in three counties in Liberia—Bong, Lofa, and Nimba—that receive substantial Chinese aid and also have the most data available on state capacity and citizens’ perceptions of state legitimacy.
