Methodology & Sources

The Japan Student Services Organization is the organization that is responsible for data collection on international educational exchange or global mobility. Data have been collected on an annual basis from 1985 to the current year. Students are classified as foreign students if they are not citizens of the country for which the data are collected. Countries unable to provide data or estimates for non-nationals on the basis of their passports were requested to substitute data according to a related alternative criterion, e.g., the country of residence, the non-national mother tongue or non-national parentage. (OECD)

Data are collected on: gender; field of study; academic level; type of host institution attended; and degree/qualification/credential awarded.
