Methodology & Sources
The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) is the primary organization responsible for international student data collection. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) sets governmental policies regarding data collection. HESA collects data from individual universities and colleges on an annual basis. For purposes of collection, students are defined by their country of domicile, i.e., "the student’s permanent or home address prior to entry to the programme of study." International students are those who are not UK-domiciled. Based on this current methodology, HESA data is available from 2002-2003 onward. Data are collected on: gender; field of study; academic level; name of host institution attended; degree/qualification/credential awarded; nationality and sources of student financial support (although not an obligatory field so gaps remain).
