Student Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to participate?
Students at member institutions are eligible to
participate prior to the completion of their regular academic degree program. In the United States, RAMP students are
typically in their junior year. Students who have completed their degree or who are not registered students at a
participating university are not eligible. Students at universities which are not members of the RAMP program are not
eligible to participate.
Each participating school sets its own criteria for student eligibility. If your school is a
member of RAMP, please contact your RAMP project
representative to find out the grade point average, foreign language ability, and level of study requirements at your
university.
Where can I go to study?
U.S. students are eligible to study in Canada or Mexico at a participating RAMP university; students from Canada are
eligible to study in Mexico or the United States, and students from Mexico are eligible to study in Canada or the United
States at a participating university.
What schools/disciplines are available?
Students are able to express a preference of schools at which they would like to study in their selected host country.
However, since space is limited, placements at specific institutions cannot be guaranteed. Almost all engineering, business
and environmental studies disciplines are available among the RAMP member institutions, although not every discipline is
available at every school. The RAMP program matches students with the universities which can best provide him/her with
academic opportunities corresponding to his/her course of studies at home. This matching process is designed to facilitate
the student's studies abroad for credit while adhering to the student's schedule at his or her home university, so that
study abroad does not delay completion of a degree at home.

list of schools and the individual school websites.
What are the financial costs?
In order to minimize the increased cost associated with most study abroad programs, RAMP consortium members offer
"tuition swaps" where students pay tuition to their home campuses, and not to the host universities. Housing, meals,
health insurance, and airfare costs are the responsibility of the students for the most part, with host campuses helping
to identify or provide inexpensive housing.
Is financial aid available?
Home campuses may have financial aid resources available for their students when studying abroad. Check with your
RAMP campus representative for more information on
financial aid available from the university or home government.
Are there any language requirements?
Students must demonstrate a command of the language of instruction at the host university.
Can I earn a degree at a university abroad?
RAMP is a non-degree student exchange program. Students receive credit from their home institutions or courses taken
abroad, which can be used toward a degree at their home university. RAMP participation is limited to a maximum of one
academic year (one semester is the average length of an exchange program).
How do I apply to participate in RAMP?
Applicants must provide the following to their RAMP campus representative by the application deadline (please contact your
RAMP campus representative for the deadline at your
university):
- A completed application form. (The application form is different for each discipline. Please contact your
RAMP campus representative for the
application form.
- Updated transcript and list of current courses.
- Completed Approval of Proposed Program of Studies form from your department for each host institution you list.
- Letter describing your reasons for applying to RAMP.
- Letter of reference from faculty member.
- Proof of language competence when applicable.
Note: Please do not apply directly to the prospective host university.
Do I need a visa?
All students participating in RAMP need to secure the proper visa for their host country. Please contact your
RAMP campus representative for information on host
country visa requirements.
