spacer U.S. Fulbright Country Summary:

[TOC]

Country Summary for
Graduate Study and Research Abroad in 2003/2004

Germany

90 FULBRIGHT FULL GRANTS
Language A basic to good proficiency in German will be helpful. However, specially sponsored seven- week language courses in Germany beginning in August can be offered to grant holders.
Grant period Grants are given for approximately 10 months beginning in September (or in August if an additional language course is offered in Germany).
Fields of study Applications will be considered from well-qualified candidates in all fields. The Fulbright Commission especially encourages applications in engineering; law and business; natural, life and environmental sciences; media and communication studies; and social sciences.
Applicants At least a bachelor’s degree is required for final admission to the Fulbright Program and a German university. Beginning graduate students who rely on the regular university curriculum should not propose projects limited to narrowly-defined topics unless they are certain that related courses are available.
Affiliation All grantees, including doctoral candidates, will be fully matriculated at accredited academic institutions in Germany to facilitate access to university resources, health insurance, etc. An applicant’s institutional preferences are taken into account, but the Fulbright Commission reserves the right to place candidates at other institutions, if necessary.
Internship program The Fulbright Program will provide a limited number of two-to four-month internship opportunities with international companies, banks, law firms, etc. during or upon completion of the academic year in Germany. U.S. students can apply for this program after arrival in Germany.
Music and fine arts Music and arts academies restrict admission in relation to age, number of students, and compatibility of grant project with curricula. Music school admission, as well as assignment to classes and instructors, is determined after personal auditions upon arrival. The Fulbright Commission may require candidates to travel to Germany to audition as early as June. Applicants are encouraged to establish contact with German music and art professors before applying for a grant and to solicit invitations to study under them. The Commission does not accept music and art students who wish to study with private teachers or schools.
Candidates in music should be aware of additional requirements when submitting supplementary materials. The date of performances or works must be indicated on each tape. Performances should not be more than one year old. The length of the recording should be at least 45 minutes. Applicants must provide recordings of complete works from at least three different musical periods. Works performed should be of the highest degree of difficulty. One of the works should be modern. Composers should submit scores and recordings of the same compositions. Conductors must submit video tapes (VHS-PAL, VHS NTSC, Pal Secam or U-Matic) of their performances. Conductors must also submit a recording of their own instrumental performance.
Stipend A monthly stipend depending on academic level and marital status, plus health insurance, will be provided.
Dependents A spousal allowance of Euros 260 is provided which may include an intensive German language course together with the spouse. However, married students will need personal funds to supplement grant benefits. See the IIE application form for required amounts.
