Freeman-EAS: Freeman Emergency Assistance for Students
from Southeast Asia

FAQ

I am an undergraduate student from India/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh/Burma (Myanmar)/Kenya/Maldives/Seychelles/Somalia/Tanzania. Am I eligible for a Freeman-EAS award?

Students from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Burma (Myanmar), Kenya, Maldives, Seychelles, Somalia, and Tanzania are not eligible for a Freeman-EAS award. Freeman-EAS awards are for students from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Students from India and Sri Lanka may be eligible for the Lumina Foundation-EAS program. For more information, go to: www.iie.org/programs/LuminaEAS

Why are Freeman-EAS awards not available to students from all countries affected by the tsunami?

The Freeman-EAS program is utilizing returned and residual loan funds from the ASIA-HELP (Asian Students in America-Higher Education Loan Program) program which IIE established with Freeman Foundation support to assist students affected by the Asian financial crisis in 1997. As the ASIA-HELP program was limited in scope to just four countries (Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand), the Freeman-EAS program is focusing on the same countries (excluding Korea which was not affected by the tsunami).

I am a graduate student. Am I eligible for a Freeman-EAS award?

Graduate students are not eligible for Freeman-EAS awards.

I am from Indonesia/Malaysia/Thailand, but I am currently a US permanent resident/US green card holder. Am I eligible for a Freeman-EAS award?

US permanent residents and US green card holders are not eligible for a Freeman-EAS award. The Freeman-EAS program is for non-immigrant students from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

I am a student in the US from Indonesia/Malaysia/Thailand. How do I obtain a Freeman-EAS application?

IIE will not send Freeman-EAS applications directly to students and will not accept applications submitted directly by students. Students must be nominated for this program by their International Student Adviser or similar university official. International Student Advisers may contact the Freeman-EAS program by email at FreemanEAS@iie.org to request an application, and should submit completed forms to IIE by email AND fax (202-326-7642) for consideration. If you are a student who is eligible for a Freeman-EAS award, please speak with your International Student Adviser to discuss your eligibility for this program.

Is my school required to contribute funds to match the Freeman-EAS award?

Your school must contribute some amount to your total expenses for Fall 2005, but your school is not required to match the exact amount of the Freeman-EAS award. School contributions may be in the form of a scholarship, stipend, loan, work study, etc.

What is the deadline for IIE to receive applications for Freeman-EAS awards?

Applications should be submitted by email to IIE at FreemanEAS@iie.org AND by fax at 202-326-7642 by September 15, 2005.
