GE Foundation Scholar-Leaders Program in Canada
The GE Foundation Scholar-Leaders Program in Canada is a unique program that provides financial support and skills development opportunities to 15 accomplished first-year undergraduate students from recognized institutions who are pursuing degrees in the fields of engineering and business/management and are a member of one of the following groups: Aboriginal peoples* -OR- persons with disabilities** -OR- women in Engineering programs***.
The program is funded by the GE Foundation, the philanthropic organization of the General Electric Company, and is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) on behalf of the Foundation.
* A Canadian resident Aboriginal individual who is either First Nation status or non-status, Métis or Inuit
** A disability is defined as “a functional limitation that is caused by physical or mental impairment that restricts a student’s ability to perform the daily activities necessary to participate in studies at a postsecondary level or in the labor force, and that is expected to remain with the student for the student’s expected life.”
*** Women in Engineering programs must be attending one of the following institutions: University of Alberta • McMaster University • University of Toronto • McGill University • École Polytechnique • Queens University

Who Can Apply?
Only applicants who meet the eligibility criteria described below will be considered for the award
Aboriginal peoples -OR- women in engineering programs -OR- persons with disabilities who:
- Are Canadian residents
- Are first-year full-time students at a recognized Canadian university*
- Are studying engineering or business/management**
- Have high academic performance, as demonstrated by first semester university results and high school transcripts.
- Demonstrate financial need
* Women in Engineering programs, must be attending one of these participating institutions only: University of Alberta, McMaster University, University of Toronto, McGill University, École Polytechnique, and Queens University.
** Aboriginal peoples and persons with disabilities considered for both fields.

Supporting Documentation – In addition to your application form, the following documentation is required:
- Essay
- High school transcripts – official copy, may be sent directly by high school
- First semester university results (if available) – official copy, may be sent directly by university
- Two letters of recommendation (see instructions on form provided)
- Proof of Aboriginal ancestry – photocopy of Band/Treaty card; Métis membership card; Inuit Beneficiary card. Students who are non-status First Nation may send a photocopy of the band card issued to parent or grandparent (for Aboriginal students only)
- Medical / disability documentation from a qualified doctor in which your ability to undertake the proposed study program is indicated (for applicants with disabilities only)
English translations must accompany any documents not in English.
Incomplete application materials or application materials received after April 30, 2009 will not be considered. Application materials will not be returned to applicants.
What is the Selection Procedure?
A selection committee will evaluate all applications. Each applicant’s motivation and academic potential will be assessed. You will be informed in May 2009 about the success of your application. Selection decisions are final. There is no appeal process.
