Lumina Foundation-EAS: Lumina Foundation Emergency Assistance for Students from South Asia |
History |
In January 2005, with generous support from the Freeman Foundation, IIE launched an emergency assistance program to help US campuses respond to the financial needs of students from Southeast Asia whose sources of support back home were affected by the December 2004 earthquake/tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Grants have been made to students from Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia to allow them to complete their spring 2005 studies in the United States, and additional grants will be available for Fall 2005 as needed. For more information on this program, contact FreemanEAS@iie.org or consult IIE’s website at: www.iie.org/programs/FreemanEAS
Through the generosity of Lumina Foundation for Education, this emergency assistance will extend to undergraduates from South Asia starting in the Fall 2005 semester. Lumina Foundation-EAS: Lumina Foundation Emergency Assistance for Students from South Asia will provide educational allowances of up to $5,000 to undergraduates from Sri Lanka and southeastern India at regionally accredited US institutions who are facing serious financial difficulties directly related to the tsunami’s impact in their region. US campuses are invited to nominate up to four (4) individuals for whom help is especially needed.
Lumina Foundation for Education, an Indianapolis-based, private, independent foundation, strives to help people achieve their potential by expanding access and success in education beyond high school. Through grants for research, innovation, communication, and evaluation, as well as policy education and leadership development, Lumina Foundation addresses issues that affect access and educational attainment among all students, particularly underserved student groups, including adult learners. The Foundation bases its mission on the belief that postsecondary education remains one of the most beneficial investments that individuals can make in themselves and that society can make in its people.
