Freeman-EAS: Hurricane Katrina Emergency Assistance for Students from East and Southeast Asia |
FAQ |
Why are Freeman-EAS: Katrina awards not available to students from all countries?
The Freeman-EAS program is utilizing returned and residual loan funds from the ASIA-HELP (Asian Students in America-Higher Education Loan Program) program which IIE established with Freeman Foundation support to assist students affected by the Asian financial crisis in 1997. As the ASIA-HELP program was limited in scope to just four countries in East and Southeast Asia (Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand), the Freeman-EAS: Katrina program is focusing on the same world region. IIE is also trying to identify potential donors to provide additional funds that could be used to support students from other countries.
I am a graduate student. Am I eligible for a Freeman-EAS award?
Yes, graduate students are eligible for Freeman-EAS: Hurricane Katrina awards.
I am a Asian student in the U.S. who has been affected by Hurricane Katrina. How do I obtain an application?
IIE will not send Freeman-EAS: Katrina applications directly to students and will not accept applications submitted directly by students. Students must be nominated for this program by their International Student Adviser or similar university official. International Student Advisers may contact the Freeman-EAS: Hurricane Katrina program by email at FreemanEAS@iie.org to request an application, and should submit completed forms to IIE by email AND fax (202-326-7642) for consideration. If you are a student who is eligible for a Freeman-EAS award, please speak with your International Student Adviser to discuss your eligibility for this program.
Is my school required to contribute funds to match the Freeman-EAS award?
No, your school is not required to contribute funds to match your award.
What is the deadline for IIE to receive applications for Freeman-EAS awards?
Applications should be submitted by email to IIE at FreemanEAS@iie.org AND by fax at 202-326-7642 to transmit a hard-copy signature. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis as quickly as possible.
