APPLICATION GUIDELINES

To Apply for a Fellowship

PLEASE READ ALL GUIDELINES BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR APPLICATION.

This Web site has been designed to provide comprehensive information about the IAF Fellowship Program. NO PRINTED MATERIALS ARE AVAILABLE. No interviews will be conducted during the review process. Applicants for an award must follow the instructions detailed on this Web site and provide ALL required information. Failure to do so will remove your application from consideration. Extraneous documentation will be destroyed and will not be used in the consideration of your application.

All required information must be typewritten using 12-point font on one side of 8 1/2" by 11" bond paper (no A4, please) and spaced as specified in each section of these instructions, deleting the brackets and inserting the required information.

Each page of the application must include a header with the applicant's full name and home university. All attachments must also include the applicant’s full name and home university.

Do not include any binders, folders or other special presentation materials, and DO NOT staple or paper clip any materials. Only sturdy binder clips are acceptable.

One complete set of application materials consists of the following sections:

·         The IAF Fellowship Application Cover Form (which must be included in the

           application packet and e-mailed toiaffellowships@iie.org in either MS Word or

           PDF format by December 31, 2009.  The document should be saved as

           LAST NAME, FIRST NAME 2010 Cover Sheet.)

·         Part I: Application Statement

·        Part II: Fellowship Curriculum Vitae (three pages maximum)

·         Part III: Personal Statement

·         Part IV: Field Research Prospectus

·         Part V: University Certification (See Guidelines for the responsible university

           office.)

Ten (10) copies of these application materials are required.  They should be collated and use either binder clips or colored paper to distinguish one set from another.

·           Part VI: Required Attachments

        Transcripts of all graduate course work.  Do not send undergraduate

           transcripts. Web transcripts are not acceptable. Student copies issued by the

           registrar’s office or official copies (which include the most recent grading period)

           are acceptable.

         Three required references (No more than three will  be accepted. See instructions

            for information on who should write your letters of reference.)

         Foreign Language Proficiency Report. An evaluation or certification of exemption

            should be submitted for each language required to conduct the research. This

            includes indigenous languages.

         Approval or declaration of exemption of the research design by university’s

            Institutional Review Board (IRB) or an official document that confirms that the

            IRB has the research design under consideration.

         Letter of affiliation from the host organization(s). This must include contact

            information for the individual writing the letter, should be on letterhead, and may

            be in Spanish, English, French, or Portuguese (as appropriate).  One letter

            should be submitted from each host organization.

One copy of each attachment is required.  Where indicated, place in a sealed and signed envelope.

Application Submission

The IAF requires Fellowship applicants to submit 10 copiesof the completed application materials and ONE COPY of each of the three reference letters, letter(s) of affiliation, transcripts and the language report(s) in sealed envelopes must be included in the same shipment. LETTERS OF REFERENCE OR LANGUAGE EVALUATIONS MUST NOT BE E-MAILED OR FAXED.  In the event of a problem, please contact the IAF Program Office.

The Fellowship application must be POSTMARKED by DECEMBER 31, 2009 and should be mailed to the address below. The IAF Fellowship Application Cover Page must be mailed electronically to iaffellowships@iie.org by December 31, 2009.


It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure timely delivery of the application materials. You may use a delivery service; it is strongly suggested you keep any tracking information.  If you are in the D.C. area, applications may be hand delivered to IIE's offices.   We are not responsible for mail or letters not delivered. 

Letters confirming receipt of applications are sent to the e-mail address on file or to the current mailing address, as appropriate, about six weeks after the deadline. We are unable to provide any other information during the selection process.  All applicants can expect notification on their status by April 15th, 2010.
