Higher Education Capacity Building

Leveraging its worldwide network of experts and leaders in higher education, IIE strengthens and links institutions of higher education and provides opportunities for joint learning and exchange of ideas.  Through workshops, study tours, conferences, forums, tailored training, research and publications for higher education leaders, the Institute brings educators together and helps them develop innovative strategies for building their capacity for research, teaching and institutional governance.  IIE’s membership network currently includes over 1,100 higher education institutions and NGOs worldwide.

  • Strategic Planning and Institutional Capacity Building. Robust networks including access to leading experts to assess needs, provide technical assistance and share best practices from higher education systems around the world.
  • Forming Global Higher Education Linkages.  Proven processes for identifying goals and potential international partners, making recommendations on a university’s partnership strategy goals and arranging for university officials to visit key institutions and potential partners.
  • Participant Training.  Unparalleled expertise managing training programs to place and monitor students, faculty and professionals in long and short-term degree or certificate programs, drawing on our extensive relationships with academic institutions throughout the world.
  • Program Evaluation. Extensive experience in carrying out all stages of short- and long-term program evaluations, from assessing program process and implementation to examining outcomes and impact. 
  • Policy Research. Expertly crafted projects and custom reports which help measure and document trends in international higher education development and academic mobility.

  • IIE’s Center for International Partnerships has led the way in assisting colleges and universities to develop and sustain institutional linkages with counterparts around the world by coordinating study tours for higher education professionals, providing advice and liaison services through IIE's network of international offices and partners, collecting and disseminating best practices in developing institutional linkages and programs and organizing U.S. study tours for higher education administrators and experts.
  • The Institute’s Center for Higher Education Capacity Development (HECD) offers customized consulting and training services to universities, corporations, government ministries and other institutions to build their capacity to manage world-class scholarship, exchange and higher education programs. 
  • Ongoing IIE Publications include Open Doors, Project Atlas, Global Education Research Reports and IIE Briefing Papers. These research reports and briefing papers serve as a rapid response to the changing landscape of international education and provide policy analysis in the field of international student mobility.
