2005 Heiskell Award Honorable Mention: Faculty Programs

University of North Dakota

Shanghai-North Dakota Joint Business Management Initiative

Nomination submitted by: Victoria Beard, Associate Provost/Professor of Accountancy, Division of Academic Affairs and College of Business and Public Administration

Program Description
The Shanghai-North Dakota Joint Business Management Initiative at the University of North Dakota clearly demonstrates the university-wide impact of a faculty exchange program, including improvements for the campus, curriculum, students and faculty, as well as the community. Over a 10-year period, what began as a faculty program has expanded to include student exchange and overseas teaching opportunities for local business owners and alumni. This program has led to significant advances in curriculum at UND, including the creation of a new Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese Studies. This model for growing sustainable faculty development initiatives has significant multiplier effects that contribute to internationalization of both the faculty and campus, as well as the broader community.
