IIE: Celebrating 95 years of opening minds to the world

2006 International Awards Gala

At the 2006 IIE International Awards Gala, held on September 19, 2006 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City, IIE was pleased to recognize three exceptional honorees for their commitment to promoting international exchange and developing leaders from around the globe who will help address international needs and have a positive impact on our world.

IIE presented its Opening Minds Corporate Leadership Award to Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., in recognition of its commitment to education and furthering global awareness in U.S. classrooms. The innovative Toyota International Teacher Program helps U.S. educators to expand their professional skills, increase cultural awareness, and enhance their understanding of environmental issues around the world, and bring this knowledge back to U.S. students.

IIE honored the Freeman Foundation with its Stephen P. Duggan Award for Mutual Understanding in honor of the foundation’s commitment to improving understanding between the United States and Asia. In recent years, the Freeman Foundation has used an innovative model of philanthropy to provide emergency assistance to students from Asia studying in the US on several important occasions, including the Asian currency crises in the late 1990s, the 2004 tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina.

IIE also recognized Edward R. Murrow with the Fritz Redlich Alumni Award, which was accepted by Murrow’s son Casey in honor of his late father. In 1932, Murrow was hired as Assistant Director of IIE, where he arranged for European scholars who were at risk in their home countries to lecture and teach at U.S. colleges and universities, an early forerunner of IIE's Scholar Rescue Fund. Murrow continued to serve as an IIE Trustee until his death in 1965.
