Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Honors the Institute of International Education West Coast Center

Award Given for Contributions to Promoting Mutual Understanding Between the U.S. and Japan

SAN FRANCISCO, December 6, 2010—The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan honored the IIE West Coast Center for advancing educational exchange and mutual understanding between the United States and Japan for more than a decade as the local coordinator of the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program. Consul General Hiroshi Inomata presented West Coast Center staff with an official certificate of commendation at a reception in San Francisco on December 6.

Each year Japanese embassies and consulates around the world nominate individuals or groups that have made distinct contributions to promoting friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and foreign countries in a wide range of areas including culture, academics, education and grassroots exchange.

As the year 2010 commemorates the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Kanrin Maru, the first Japanese official ship that crossed the Pacific to the City of San Francisco, that led to the first people-to-people exchange between Japan and the United States, the Ministry selected the IIE West Coast Center as one of the awardees this year to express its appreciation for their longstanding dedication and contribution in the aforementioned areas to increasing mutual understanding.

The certificate reads:
