As a fellow in the U.S. Academic Immersion Program (USAIP) component of the Bulgarian Young Leaders Program (BYLP), Iliana Lazarova attended Barnard College at Columbia University during the 2011-2012 academic year. While at Barnard, Iliana excelled academically, joined several on-campus organizations, volunteered and secured a prestigious internship with the Bulgarian Mission to the United Nations.
In July of 2012, Iliana passed her exams with honors and graduated from the University of National and World Economy in Sofia, Bulgaria with a degree in Economics and International Relations. Instead of pursuing a lucrative private sector job after graduation, Iliana decided to give back to her country and her community by joining Teach for Bulgaria (TFB). Similar to Teach for America, TFB encourages and prepares capable and ambitious young Bulgarians to become teachers and leaders in Bulgaria, and works to ensure access to quality education for Bulgarian Children.
Through TFB, Iliana teaches English to underachieving and marginalized students in the village of German. Her goal is not only to help her students to learn English, but also to inspire them to believe in themselves and their potential.
