Grant Activity: Approximately 10 classroom lectures per week, four meetings with English teachers about teaching material, interdisciplinary project planning, etc. Preparation, classroom teaching, and follow-up will amount to an average of 15 hours per week. The average class size is 25-35 students. Provide students and faculty with first hand up-to-date information on U.S. society, contribute to cultural understanding and help improve the students' English language skills.
Specialization(s): Area studies of the U.S.: American cultural history, political system, geography, people, education and business; American business and society; the modern American family; cross-cultural comparisons: Americans/Danes, Americans/Europeans; American anthropological and ethnographic methods; American consumer behavior, methodology of market analysis, marketing, psychology of consumption in relation to social structures; characteristics of American culture that make America an innovative and individualistic society and enhance the spirit of entrepreneurship (It is preferred that the grantee have a strong background in marketing, as that is one of the most important subjects for Danish commercial students. Interdisciplinary teaching is also part of commercial upper secondary instruction in Denmark.)
Language: English is sufficient.
Additional Qualifications: M.A. and at least 3 years teaching experience preferred, though a genuine enthusiasm for teaching 17-19 year old students is more important than the number of years of teaching experience. Community college faculty are encouraged to apply.

Length of Grant: 2 months
Starting Date: September 1 to November 1, 2009. Preferred arrival date: Late August 2009.
Comments: Instruction will be at the Commercial Upper Secondary Education level, which can be compared to the last 3 years of an American high school, but with a much stronger focus on the commercial aspects in all fields. Grantee should give one or two lectures for all 500 commercial students on a topic to be agreed upon such as U.S. foreign policy, cultural impact on the rest of the world, etc., and one seminar for English teachers in the area on such topics as U.S. culture, literature, politics. Host institution will assist in finding housing for the grantee. A student dormitory with individual apartments at DKK 3000 per month is available if the grantee is interested.
