IIE's Latin America division was established in Mexico City in 1974. IIE Latin America has played a critical role in helping to train current and future leaders in a wide range of fields, providing educational opportunities to disadvantaged sectors of Latin American society, promoting U.S. higher education and facilitating English language training and testing.
The office currently includes 23 staff in Mexico and outreach representatives in Brazil and Guatemala. The Mexico City EducationUSA Advising Center is the largest in the hemisphere and promotes U.S. higher education by offering information about educational opportunities in the U.S. Among the wide range of sponsors for IIE Latin America scholarship programs are the U.S. State Department, the Ford Foundation, General Electric, the World Wildlife Fund, and NYUAD. The office also maintains an Educational Testing Service computer and internet-based test center where it supervises administration of the TOEFL, GRE, USMLE and other high stakes exams and provides an Institutional TOEFL Testing Program for educational institutions.
