What is the Global Internship Program for Unemployed Youth?

During an initial two-year cycle (2013-2015), Legacy Alcoa Foundation’s Global Internship Program provided workforce development opportunities for 500 unemployed youth (ages 18-24) in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Russia, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States with the aim of increasing the employability of youth in the manufacturing sector. As part of the Global Internship Program for Unemployed Youth, IIE and its funding partners work with local nonprofit organizations to provide youth with work-related experience in manufacturing, leadership skills, and resources about post-secondary career and training options.

  • 95% of these individuals completed the program during the initial two-year cycle.
  • 73% of those who completed the program are currently employed or enrolled in a workforce training or education program.

Based on the overwhelming success of the initial two-year cycle, Legacy Alcoa Foundation launched a new cycle of workforce development opportunities in October 2015. This cycle will build upon existing relationships with five of the non-profit partner organizations who helped implement the first cycle of the initiative to provide opportunities for 200 unemployed youth (ages 18-24) in Australia, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
