    No, please only complete the application form and supplementary documents listed on the instructions for this call.

  2. Can I submit documents in Portuguese?
    Please send all documents in English if possible. Anything submitted in Portuguese should also be submitted with an official translation*. The only document that does not need a translation is proof that you have applied for a passport.
    * Students CANNOT translate their own documents. An official translation is one that is completed by a skilled translator who is able to provide an accurate and complete interpretation of the original document. IIE recommends that students ask a school official to translate and stamp the documents with a signature or institutional seal. IIE will also accept translations completed by the EducationUSA office. You should consult an EducationUSA Advisor regarding the translation of your documents.

  4. What should I send as proof that I applied for a passport?
    You can submit a receipt, a copy of the passport application, or anything from the office to show that you have applied. It is okay if this is in Portuguese.

  5. What should I send as proof that I have taken the TOEFL?
    You do not need to send anything to prove you have taken the TOEFL.

  6. Do I need to submit a writing sample?
    A writing sample is not required at this time. Please follow the instructions on the previous page.

  7. If I already submitted transcript to CAPES at the beginning of the year, do I need to submit another transcript to IIE?
    Yes. We need your most up to date transcripts with the official translation as explained above.

  8. How should I name the files that I submit to IIE?
    Please follow the Step-by-Step instructions for how to name your files. You do not need to worry about the naming of files that are not mentioned there.

  9. What should I do if I cannot submit all of my documents by May 12th?
    We must have your application form by May 12. Any missing supplemental documents will be handled on a case by case basis. Incomplete applications past May 12th will delay the placement and immigration process, which will complicate the visa process for you.

  10. Should my Instructor Evaluation be hand written or typed?
    It is preferred that the evaluation is typed, however hand written is acceptable. The form must be signed by your professor and scanned to be e-mailed to IIE.

  11. My full address or university name will not fit in the space provided on the Instructor Evaluation page. What should I do?
    You can abbreviate your address and university name on the evaluations; we will have the information from your application.

  12. Does my Instructor Evaluation need to be in English? What if my professor cannot write an evaluation in English?
    Instructor Evaluations in English are preferred, however if that is not available to you, you may submit a letter in Portuguese with an official translation.

  13. My professor would prefer to send the Instructor Evaluation directly, is that an option?
    It is preferred that evaluations are sent with the application, however if a professor will only submit an evaluation directly, they may email it to BSWBapp_fall@iie.org. The email must include your full name and email address or it will not be added to your application.

    You do not need to worry about this question; please leave it blank.

  15. Who can complete an Instructor Evaluation for me? Is it okay if they were a research mentor and not a professor? What if they work at another university? Is it okay if they are retiring this year?
    Any qualified faculty member that you worked with academically, from any institution, retired or not, may complete your evaluation.

    Please leave these fields blank. The CAID is the Common Application ID number (which you do not need). The CEEB/ACT code is for American high schools only.

    The anticipated graduation date refers to when you plan to complete your studies and graduate from your university in Brazil.

Visa Process

 

  1. What should I do if do not have a passport?
    If you do not have a passport you must apply for one immediately. We strongly encourage you to apply for an expedited passport and get it to IIE as soon as possible. If we do not receive your passport by the May 30 it will delay the immigration process, and complicate the visa process for you.

  2. What medical exams and vaccines will I need before entering the U.S.?
    This varies based on your host institution. You will receive this information once we have finalized your placement.

  3. How will I get my visa? Will I attend a Visa Day Pre-Departure Orientation? Should I purchase a plane ticket to my consulate city now?
    If we receive all your documents on time you will be invited to attend a visa day in July. This is why it is extremely important to get us your passport as soon as possible. If we do not have your passport on time then you will need to obtain the visa on your own.
    Please DO NOT purchase plane tickets or arrange ANY travel for this until you receive official information from IIE to you directly.

  1. If I am interested in attending a particular university, should I contact them directly?
    No, please do not contact any universities directly. This can cause confusion for the universities and will delay your placement.

  2. Will my Academic Program be at the same university as my Intensive English Program (IEP)?
    Our goal is to have everyone attend their IEP at the same university they will attend for their academic study, however this is not guaranteed.

    Yes, for this call all students are required to participate in the full semester of IEP. If you do not wish to participate in the IEP, please contact your CAPES technician directly to inquire about the next academic call.

  5. When is my estimated date of arrival in United States?
    You will be arriving to the U.S. sometime in August or September. However this is determined by your host institution’s start date and we will not have an official arrival date for you until your placement is finalized.

  6. What is the minimum score that we need to achieve the English semester in the USA?
    CAPES has not informed us of a minimum score to participate in this call.

  7. When will I know what university I will be attending?
    This depends on the application process for each host institution. We cannot provide you with a date at this time. However, we estimate that you will have this information in July.

  8. Will I need to pass an English exam at the end of the semester? If I fail, will I have another chance to take the test again or will I return to Brazil?
    Your host institution for the IEP may require a final exam for the course, but you will not be retaking the TOEFL. Students will not be sent home if they do not achieve a certain level of English, but may be required to take further English courses.
