Since 1968 the FLTA Program has aimed to strengthen foreign language instruction at U.S. educational institutions by establishing a native speaker presence in the classroom. The FLTA Program provides an opportunity for young, international teachers to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States.
IIE works with both applicants and host institutions to provide placement services for FLTA candidates. IIE also provides visa sponsorship for FLTA candidates who have already been selected by a host university (direct placements).
FLTAs are typically teaching assistants at postsecondary educational institutions. However, individuals interested in assistant teaching at K-12 schools (elementary, middle, or high schools) are also welcome to apply.

Become a Host Institution
Host Institutions wishing to host FLTAs may tailor the program to meet their unique pedagogical needs. FLTAs often teach beginning and intermediate classes or offer tutorial sessions to improve students' language acquisition. On many campuses they serve as directors of language houses or clubs, offering students uncommon access to target languages.
Applicants interested in becoming an FLTA should carefully review each aspect of the program and eligibility criteria. Outgoing and adaptable individuals who demonstrate maturity, integrity and professionalism are encouraged to apply.
