2012 Activities

On February 22nd and 23rd, participants took part in the second and final workshop of the USIPP program, which  provided USIPP participants with an opportunity to share progress in the development of new study abroad programs, and to begin exploring tactics for ensuring sustainability.

For the first day of the workshop on February 22nd, participants were encouraged to attend the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) conference, also being held in Washington, DC. This annual conference is a gathering of high-level university administrators and other influential individuals from the public and private sector who are interested in recent trends in international education. On this day, participants in the USIPP program presented a panel on U.S.-Indonesia Academic Collaboration: Strategies and Lessons Learned. Panelists included Mohamed El-Aasser (Lehigh University), Allen Hicken (University of Michigan), Diana Jahja (IIEF), and Purwiyatno Hariyadi (Bogor Agricultural University). Informative presentations from the four panelists were followed by a discussion among audience members.

The second day of the workshop (February 23rd) was held at IIE's DC office and featured remarks from Allan Goodman, President  & CEO, Institute of International Education; Elizabeth Thornhill, Branch Chief of the Office of Global Educational Programs, Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs; and Haryo Winarso, Educational Attaché, Indonesian Embassy. The workshop also featured a presentation on Standards in Developing Study Abroad Programs by Brian Whalen, President and CEO of The Forum on Education Abroad. Finally, the workshop participants had a breakout session where they discussed  recommendations for developing U.S.-Indonesia study abroad programs and institutional partnerships. Immediately following the workshop, the Indonesian participants went to various U.S. campuses for a short-term practical training program before returning to Indonesia.

Prior to the February workshop, IIE launched the USIPP White Paper, Expanding Study Abroad to Indonesia: U.S. and Indonesian Perspectives and Strategies for Expansion. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities in developing study abroad programs to Indonesia, based on findings from two surveys administered to Indonesian and U.S. higher education administrators.
