Theories of Change in Democratic Backsliding
Unwelcome Change: Understanding, Evaluating, and Extending Theories of Democratic Backsliding
May 2014 – April 2015
The Yale University research team implemented the first phase of the DRG Center’s Theories of Change project, focused on democratic backsliding. The researchers evaluated and organized the body of academic theory that can contribute to understanding how and why a governance system that had been democratizing would shift instead towards greater authoritarianism. Yale’s final products—a White Paper and Theory Matrix—will guide USAID field officers in designing programs that seek to reverse the diverse restrictions on rights and freedoms, and the loss of accountability, that characterize democratic backsliding.
