ICT: Girls who dare to be there!

What inspired you to get involved with this project/organization?

As a hands-on science centre, Sci-Enza is involved with various science awareness and enrichment projects. I noticed how some of our visitors fall behind and fail to benefit from our initiatives if they lack basic computer skills. We have conducted several science awareness projects aimed at girls and women before, but never with a specific focus on technology and computing. This is such an exciting field with many opportunities and I realised that Sci-Enza should be involved! I must confess, I am a bit of a technophobe… so I thought to myself, what better way to face your fears? Become a women engaging in technology, dare to be there!

What do you hope to learn from the WeTech Network?

I hope that as a network we can share ideas on how to improve computer and technology literacy among African learners – girls in particular – especially in communities with limited resources. Personally, I wish to better my own utilisation of technology and I hope learn from the network how to reach and engage new audiences using technology.

What is your big dream for girls and women in STEM?

I dream that STEM will become more popular, trendier and more exciting than MTV or Hollywood! I dream that all girls will be exposed to inspirational STEM role models who can help them to aspire to a career in STEM. I dream that all girls will have access to high quality education, technology and career guidance.

What is the goal of your project?

With this project we want to expose girls and women to role models and opportunities within the field of computing and technology. We also aim to improve girls’ basic computer skills. Our goal is to truly inspire and excite girls and women about technology.

Who is the target audience for your project?

Our various project activities, such as the Women in Computing Role Model Day and Speed Date the Computer Scientist event will target teenage girls, young female students and women. An emphasis will be placed on reaching girls from underserved schools from informal settlements around Pretoria.

Anything else?

I look forward to being an active member of the WeTech network. Thank you to IIE for this wonderful opportunity to expand Sci-Enza’s reach and enable us to help girls and women engage in technology! or
