Private Foundations

IIE's private foundation programs include initiatives to provide higher education opportunities to outstanding individuals from disadvantaged groups, leadership training for emerging leaders, strategic gatherings of experts, training in leadership and organizational effectiveness, rescuing scholars and students in need, and assistance with outreach to accomplished artists, scholars, and researchers. IIE also works with private foundations to increase opportunities for Americans to study, teach, and conduct research abroad

Among many others, the Institute works with:

• The Ford Foundation to implement the Ford International Fellowships Program, a $355 million investment that is making it possible for 4,400 talented, socially committed individuals from marginalized and underrepresented communities in 22 countries to earn advanced degrees.
  
• The David and Lucile Packard Foundation to implement the Leadership Development for Mobilizing Reproductive Health Program (LDM), which has supported more than 1,200 emerging and established leaders who have the vision and commitment to improve family planning and reproductive health services in Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the Philippines.
  
• The Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center in Italy to help talented scholars, artists, and professionals advance work that has multi-disciplinary impact.
  
• The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Open Society Institute, to rescue scholars around the world whose lives and work are in danger.
  
• The Carnegie Corporation of New York to develop the first ever classification system of higher education institutions in the Middle East and North Africa.
  
• The AIFS Foundation to produce a series of Global Education Research Reports such as International India: A Turning Point in Educational Exchange with the U.S.

All of these initiatives are defined by the following key features:

• Global Reach and Experience. IIE works with people from all backgrounds and world regions and is sensitive to the needs of various cultures and demographics.
  
• Sponsor Focus. IIE is committed to each funder’s vision and works closely with them to brand programs, develop program policies, design reporting tools, and monitor program achievements and results.
  
• Commitment to Global Leadership. IIE programs focus on developing the skills and abilities of young individuals and preparing them for future leadership roles and workplace success.
  
• Involvement of Key Stakeholders. IIE includes local stakeholders in important grant activities and implementation, and works with local personnel to build capacity to assume project functions.
  
• Transparency. IIE has a strong record of developing transparent, clear, and fair outreach and selection processes.
  
• Technological Innovation and Administrative Efficiency. IIE is at the forefront of technological innovation in scholarship management and has developed highly refined financial and grant management systems. IIE utilizes key social media to network students and alumni.
