Over 100 Friends of IIE, IIE Board of Trustees, Fulbright Alumni and donors gathered on Monday, January 25th 2010 to celebrate the recent publication of Scholar Rescue in the Modern World. Dr. Henry Jarecki, SRF Chairman and IIE Trustee, gave an engaging and comprehensive presentation about the book, which he and Daniela Kaisth, IIE Vice President of Strategic Development, co-authored this past year. Explaining the metrics for gauging success in rescuing threatened scholars, Dr. Jarecki cited examples of SRF data gathered for the report and demonstrated that, in its first five years, the Scholar Rescue Fund has met its mission. IIE Chairman Thomas S. Johnson welcomed guests. He described the important work made possible through the Fulbright Legacy Fund, and then warmly introduced Dr. Henry Jarecki highlighting his admirable work for and commitment to the Scholar Rescue Fund.
Scholar Rescue in the Modern World, made possible by a generous grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, is an effort to share with a larger community the breadth and nature of the persecution of scholars around the world. Taking SRF data from scholars in more than 100 countries who have asked SRF for assistance during its first five years, the report demonstrates that the threats to scholars are chronic and widespread. The book also provides recommendations for programs or activities to mitigate scholar oppression worldwide.
We thank everyone who joined us for this event, and especially thank the New York Chapter of the Fulbright Association for partnering with us to make this event a success.
