JB Fernandes Award for NGO Excellence Deadline Extended until March 31, 2015!

The JB Fernandes Award for NGO Excellence in Trinidad & Tobago was established to honor local NGOs, CBOs and civil society organizations that are national models of excellence, improving their communities and utilizing best practices in non-profit management.

The purpose of the award is to:

  • Formally honor the NGO, CBO and civil society profession and communicate the positive impact that these organizations have in the communities, villages and neighborhoods throughout Trinidad and Tobago;
  • Highlight the best practices of NGOs (effective management, accountability, good governance);
  • Identify emerging trends and underrepresented areas in the sector;
  • Identify key leaders who will shape the sector.

Following a merit-based selection process, a one-time award of $5,000 US will be given. These funds must be used towards the strengthening of the organization's structure and/or education of its staff.

The winner will be honored at an awards luncheon at the 2015 T&T NGO Professionals Seminar.

A Message from the JB Fernandes Memorial Trust

Dear T&T NGO Conference Attendees:

It is with great pleasure that I am sharing the 2014 T&T NGO Professionals Conference Evaluation Report (301 KB, PDF) with you.

In May 2014, the JB Fernandes Trust partnered with the local NGO sector in Trinidad and Tobago to host the third annual T&T NGO Professionals Conference.

Over the last three years, we have learned from and grown with our partners to make these events valuable for all the participating organisations.

I am happy to report that based on the results of this year's evaluation, the Conference successfully met its key objectives, creating a space where NGO professionals were exposed to new ideas and best practices, connected with new peers, and collectively reflected on and expanded their vision for the entire sector.

This year, thanks to past feedback, more time was scheduled for networking. We will continue to explore ways to create additional networking opportunities as the Conference Evaluation Report also told us that you want us to continue bringing together generations of NGO leaders to learn and benefit from each other's experiences. In addition, the report revealed that you are interested in workshops for more mature NGOs and future T&T NGO Professionals events will seek to address this.

We're also pleased to report that there was an increase in the number of NGOs from Tobago attending the 2014 Conference.

The JB Fernandes Trust is committed to its stated goal of finding effective ways to strengthen the capacity of Trinidad and Tobago's NGO sector. Having the opportunity to be in the room and interact directly with NGO professionals helps the Trust learn more about the sector's current capacity and its specific needs. We truly understand the vitality, commitment and ingenuity of the local NGO sector and its tremendous contribution to the country and its people.

Moving forward, the Trust will seek ways to strengthen individual organisations addressing children, youth and families; education; and poverty reduction, while simultaneously increasing the availability of high-quality training and providing more networking possibilities for NGOs.

In closing, I want to again express the Trust's gratitude to the Steering Committee, the United Way, our conference sponsors, workshop leaders and panelists, volunteers and all those who partnered with us to take this big step. Onward!

Thank You!

Thank you to all the NGOs and presenters that participated in the 2014 Trinidad & Tobago NGO Professionals Conference and shared their organisation's best practices, challenges and future plans.

We also say thank you to our steering committee, conference registration partner - the United Way Trinidad & Tobago, and our generous conference sponsors - the JB Fernandes Memorial Trust I, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, Institute of International Education (IIE), Veni Apwann and the Hyatt Regency Trinidad. Thanks also to our volunteers who did an exceptional job in assisting attendees and organisers during the conference.

A special thank you goes to Marie Clark of Clark Communications for her invaluable work with our conference Facebook and T&T NGO News blog, and her overall advice. We could not have run this conference without her!
