Highlights
China sends the largest number of international students to the United States with a record-breaking 194,029 students in 2011/2012 (25.4% of the total number international students in the U.S). (Source: IIE Open Doors). In the last five years, there has been a significant surge in Chinese students interested in attending U.S. colleges. The driving factor has been the rising economic affluence of a growing number of families in China, as well as their strong belief that attending U.S. schools will give them a top quality education. Hong Kong: Renowned for its rich trading history and strong ties to international business, Hong Kong is a city with a well-established tradition of families sending their children to study overseas. In 2011/12, more students are opting to study in the U.S., due to a new education system enabling a fluid transition from H.K. to the U.S.
Along with its rapid economic growth, Taiwan has emphasized education and this focus is reflected by the country having one of the world’s highest literacy rates. A total of 23,250 students from Taiwan attended U.S. programs in 2011/12. It is the sixth leading place of origin for international students in the U.S., according to Open Doors.
