Dr. M. Gary Sayed is IIE’s Vice President of Scholar Exchanges, and Executive Director of CIES. As the Executive Director of CIES, a division of IIE, Gary leads the Fulbright Scholar Program and related programs administered by IIE/CIES on behalf of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State to develop international faculty and higher education exchanges, research and linkages. The Fulbright Scholar Program provides grants to U.S. scholars and professionals to lecture or conduct research abroad (U.S. Program) and brings foreign scholars to the United States to conduct research or lecture (Visiting Program). As a vice president of IIE, he will also represent the Institute at events and conferences and interact with academic leaders in the United States and abroad.
With his extensive academic and international experience, Gary is well suited to lead the scholar programs at IIE/CIES. He has been a visiting professor or higher education consultant at universities in Turkey, Kuwait, Malaysia, Japan, Angola, the UAE, Hungary and Taiwan, and was a Senior Fulbright Scholar to Turkey in 1996.
Before joining CIES, Gary completed a four-year assignment in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as Director of the Molecular & Functional Imaging Group at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center and professor, Graduate Program Director at its academic affiliate, Alfaisal University College of Medicine. He has served as Provost, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and professor at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, as Dean at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, and as Chairman of Diagnostic Imaging at Thomas Jefferson University.
In addition to holding an Ed.D in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania, Gary earned his Ph.D. in medical radiation physics at the University of Toledo (formerly the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo). He is a medical nuclear physicist certified by the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine and currently serves as the Director of the Board.
