Since 1981, the IIE Energy Group has developed the skills and knowledge of key energy and environment professionals worldwide. Our graduates support their nations' economic development while protecting their natural resource base. Over 10,000 professionals, from senior policy makers to industry engineers have benefitted from this training and they now play leading roles in the development and implementation of their countries' energy and environmental programs.

The Group serves as a centralized resource base for energy and environmental training, needs assessments (TNA), institutional strengthening (IS) and technical assistance (TA). Our approach is neutral, unbiased and independent. For each assignment, we select expert practitioners from our extensive network of energy and environmental specialists to provide practical, skills-based training or TA that is focused on long term sustainability. Our selection process is highly demanding and specific - we only choose individuals who have the breadth and depth of knowledge required for the assignment, who are highly experienced, who enjoy working with people of different cultures, are approachable, and have a strong desire to share his/her knowledge in order to contribute to the process of development. Finally, we help our alumni and training partners develop in-country Alumni Associations to encourage the sustainability of the training impact and continue the process of knowledge exchange initiated by the training event.

HISTORY

Evolving to meet new challenges...

In response to the oil supply crisis of the late 1970's, IIE decided to apply its 60 years of experience in international education and training towards the development of integrated, targeted training programs for energy sectors world wide. In 1981, IIE teamed together a small select group of energy and development professionals with international experience to manage this new initiative. Over the years the group has developed over 90 courses responding to current issues in the energy sector of that day.

The initial series of courses in Oil, Coal and Gas development was in response to the scarcity and high oil and gas prices in the late 1970's. As prices began to fall and resources became more stable, the group took this opportunity to expand its training program to include Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency courses. In the late 1980's the increasing concern for environmental protection world wide, prodded the Energy Group to add yet another series of courses in Environmental Management to the repertoire. In the early 1990's, there was a dramatic change in the structure of the Energy Sector worldwide. The push for economic growth in developing countries and the new Central Asian republics resulted in an increasing demand for energy. The Energy Group responded in force with a series of new courses in Privatization, Restructuring and Regulatory Reform This program offers courses in Electric Markets, Bid Solicitation, Utility Regulation, Power Purchase Agreements, Privatization of State Owned Enterprises and the like. Training offered by the Energy Group became a driving force in reshaping the Energy Industry in the 1990's.

More recently, Global Climate Change has created the need for expertise in the areas of emissions trading, economic analysis of the impact of climate change, monitoring and verification of carbon emissions, and macro-economic modeling that includes climate change impacts. These courses support the already existing portfolio of renewable energy and energy efficiency courses which offer efficient solutions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Energy Group is developing these courses and currently offering them under the USAID Energy and Environment Training Program's Technical Leadership Training Program.

The Energy Group will continue to develop high quality, targeted training and TA to meet the current needs of the international community in the energy and environment sectors.
