ELECTRIC
POWER COURSES
Power Plant Operation and Maintenance is for electric
utility engineers with experience in power generation. Course
covers all aspects of power plant and substation maintenance
and operation (including steam, hydro, and gas turbines,
and diesel generators), including environmental pollution
control, and cogeneration.
Demand Side Management is for utility and government
engineers, planners, analysts and managers involved in planning
and managing energy conservation/efficiency programs. Course
provides participants with a comprehensive overview of the
elements required for successful integration of Demand Side
Management (DSM) into utility operations. It offers options
to capacity-constrained utilities for reducing the future
cost of meeting end-user needs. Training includes assessment
of energy efficiency opportunities and the selection, planning,
implementation, and evaluation of DSM programs. Participants
develop and refine prospective DSM programs for one or more
promising markets in their service area. They also receive
training in use of computer programs that can be helpful
in DSM planning and program design. To the extent possible,
participants work with actual data from their countries.
Integrated Resource Planning and Demand-Side Management
(IRP/DSM) is for senior policy-makers provides participants
with a basic understanding of IRP/DSM. Workshop introduces
the benefits of pursuing these activities. Participants
discuss economic benefits of end-use efficiency programs
and their impact on electric utilities. Workshop outlines
key components of effective DSM programs and describes relevant
lessons from U.S. experience, relating state-of-the-art
strategies and programs to local conditions.
