Fall 2007/Academic Year 2007-2008 Application Now Available Online
The Gilman International Scholarship is now accepting applications from students participating in study abroad programs during Fall 2007/ Academic Year 2006-2007. The Gilman Scholarship is open to all U.S. undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:
- The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of study abroad.
- The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's institution of higher education in the U.S.
- The applicant is studying abroad for at least four weeks in one country.
- The applicant is studying abroad in a country not currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba.
- The applicant is studying on a program that begins between July 15, 2007 and October 15, 2007. The Fall cycle encompasses fall semester, quarter, and academic year programs. January term applicants should apply during the Spring 2008 cycle.
There has never been a better time to apply. More than 800 scholarship will be awarded to students during the 2007-2008 academic year. Award recipients will receive up to $5,000.
Students apply online via the Gilman website, http://www.iie.org/gilman. The student online application deadline is April 3, 2007. The advisor certification deadline is April 10, 2007. New! Gilman Scholarship Promotional Materials
The Gilman Program has a new informational CD with lots of great information, including a PowerPoint presentation, tips for advising, and FAQs, to help you promote the Gilman Scholarship on your campus. Included in the CD is a PowerPoint presentation with prerecorded information on eligibility and how to apply for the Gilman Scholarship. Simply press play on the slideshow and Gilman staff will describe the program requirements and application process to your students and staff. All you have to do is press play and we will do the rest!
Don't forget to restock your office in time for the study abroad fair season with Gilman Brochures and Posters.

Visit the Publicity Page (http://www.iie.org/programs/gilman/advisors/publicity.html) of the Gilman website to download a Gilman flyer. Advisors often utilize this flyer for campus fairs and events where large quantities of handouts may be needed. Some campuses also provide copies of this flyer in application packets or distribute them via email to all Pell grant recipients on campus.
Critical Need Language Supplement
During the 2007-2008 academic year 25 recipients will be eligible to receive a $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement for a total possible award of up to $8,000. Critical Need Languages include:
- Arabic (all dialects)
- Chinese (all dialects)
- Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek)
- Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki)
- Indic (Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi)
- Korean
- Russian

Once you have logged into the application, please be sure to view the list of other certifying advisors at your institution at the bottom of the page to make sure that list is accurate. Applicant's will be able to select any advisor listed under the other certifying advisors list for your institution. If the information on that list is not accurate, please notify the Gilman Program at gilman_scholars@iie.org. All advisors who will be certifying applications for the Gilman Scholarship must have a registered account in the Gilman application system. Applicants will not be able to select you as their advisor or submit an application until you have created an account. Advisors only need to create an account once. Once you have created an account in the application, you will continue to be able to use the same login and password every cycle. If you have forgotten your password from last cycle, you can have your password sent to you. Simply click on the lost password link at the top left of the login page.

The Gilman International Scholarship Program awarded 777 scholarships for the Academic Year 2006-2007. The Gilman Program is excited to have been able
to offer more awards than ever before.
This newest group of Gilman Alumni for the Spring 2007 cycle represent undergraduate students from over 225 colleges and universities in 46 states and Puerto Rico. Recipients will be studying in 63 different countries including Zambia, Mongolia, Oman, and Uruguay. The list of Spring Gilman Scholars (including students’ home states and universities) is available at www.iie.org/gilman.
Donalyn Allen, a Critical Need Language Supplement recipient from Xavier University of Louisiana, will be studying in Egypt.
Desiree Vea, from Wells College, will be studying in South Korea.
Patrick Day, from the University of California – Davis, will be studying in New Zealand.
Rahkeem Morris, from Hudson Valley Community College, will be studying in the Dominican Republic.
