Location: Sendai Sendai
is the largest city in the Tohoku Region. Sendai has about one
million inhabitants and is located 350 km to the northeast of
Tokyo. It is an important economic and cultural center in
northern Japan with many universities, government agencies,
and corporate branch headquarters. Sendai, is often called the
"City of Trees", as it is a city known for its pleasant
streets lined with many trees, and it is also regarded as and
"academic city" with its center on Tohoku University.
Courses available in the
Junior Year In English Program
1. Between 4 and 5 Global Eł students will be accepted
annually.
2. Preference will be given to students who study at Tohoku for a full academic year.
3. No more than 2 students from the same home school are able to study at Tohoku in the same AY.
4. International students will be enrolled in Tohoku University's Junior Year in English Program (JYPE).

Main language of instruction
All courses in the JYPE are conducted in English. Students
with sufficient Japanese language skills are also able to
take courses in Japanese.

Students must complete the following forms: 1. JYPE Application 2. Certificate of Eligibility 3. Certificate of Health The first term of the Junior Year in English Program begins
in early October and ends in mid-February. The second term
begins in early April and ends in early August.
**Students will
not be able to study for only the second term.**
Housing and Cost of Living
JYEP participants are able to stay at the Tohoku University
International House for about 5,000 yen per month. Students
can expect to pay an additional 10,000 yen each month for
utilities. Cost of living for students in Sendai is typically
around 80,000 yen per month. Health insurance is also vailable
at a cost of 1,600 yen per month. Students accepted to study
in Japan will be eligible to be nominated by the Tohoku University
to receive the JASSO scholarship (only if a JASSO application is submitted along with the application).

This scholarship is available to qualified international students. The JASSO scholarship is intended to promote international student exchange between Japanese and overseas universities, thereby mutually enhancing the quality of their educational and scholastic activities while promoting mutual understanding and friendship between countries. Monthly Stipend: 80,000 JPY (up to 12 months) Relocation allowance: 15,000 JPY (upon arrival only)
